3 Looks 1 Palette ft. Ariel Storylook Palette

When I first started getting into makeup and specifically, started lusting after the Urban Decay Naked palette, I thought that the YouTube videos that showed you multiple looks with one palette were gold! It's great when something handy as a palette, is actually handy to create a variety of looks on its own! I've had a lot of time to play with my Disney x Sephora Ariel Storylook Palette (reviewed here) and I've come up with so many looks using just the eyeshadows in this palette. I thought it would be a great idea to create a video recreating my top 3 looks that fell into three completely different categories (neutral, smokey, and colorful) There's a look for everyone! I hope this video inspires some of you to create new looks with your palette, and if you haven't got this palette, than just inspired you to think outside the box with some fun colors!
Which look was your favorite?

Even Mermaids Have Shopping Problems Update 01 + Life Update

Aloha, chickadees. I shan't even apologize for the random greeting - it's coot. Today on The Mod Mermaid it's all about updates; spending ban updates, as well as general life updates, as you may or may not have noticed... I haven't blogged in a good week (which is a LONG time in blogger talk) I think I'll start with what's been going on in my life that may or may not send me into a shopping-to-make-it-all-go-away spiral. I initially wanted to take a small break because classes were starting and I wasn't sure how to approach keeping up my blog, YouTube channel, and my class load. I also got a job (hooray!) which was very good news but at the same time I was like "AH, MY BLOG?! When am I going to have time?!" All of that coupled with some strange sadness towards my blog and just being plain unhappy with it. It's not that I've run out of ideas for fun posts - I just didn't feel like writing them. So I figured I'd just take a little break from blogging until classes started and I could get everything sorted, then I'll be able to see when I can blog/write up scheduled posts. Well, here's where things turned for the worst. I was so excited for school and even had my backpack packed days in advance, little did I know (excuse the caps) I WASN'T GOING TO BE GOING. My school failed to properly notify me that my tutition fees were due and did me the lovely courtesy of dropping me from every class I registered for. Not only that, none of my potential professors wanted to over tally me into their class. Sure, I could've gone through the scraps and created a new schedule but I'm a Junior and pretty much done with Gen. Eds. and just waiting to take higher level Psychology classes. The only classes available to me were classes I've already done or super duper high level Psych classes that I can't take yet. Sooo ... it looks like I won't be going to classes until February, which to a normal student is like YEAH! but I was actually looking forward to it, and now it looks like I shan't be graduating on time. Swell news, you can imagine. I was already not in the right head space and this just threw me into a spiral of WHAT NOW?! I still don't know 'what now?' but I'm just thankful I have a new job to keep me busy. I don't think I could take another 3 months just sitting at home *breathes in* That's my little life update - I'm bummed, but back and now we can move on to the spending ban update! I promise this life update wasn't a way to distract you from all the spending I did, haha!!
Okay, so two weeks ago I start my little spending ban titled Even Mermaids Have Shopping Problems in the hopes of, mainly, sorting out my need to buy the latest and sometimes not so greatest makeup bits. Right now I'm thinking "so far, so good" and I'm feeling quite confident that I'll make it the 100 days sticking within my rules. Like I mentioned in my life update, I did get a job, but before that there was an interview that required I wear 'business attire' which, embarrassingly enough, I didn't have any. Not even a blazer! So I was forced to break two rules:
  • No spending on clothes or shoes.
  • BIGGEST RULE :: No letting my mom treat me to beauty purchases, whatsoever, and no unnecessary clothing purchases..
Yeah, I broke my biggest rule, but hey, now that I'm reading it, I did say unnecessary and getting a business dress and blazer were quite necessary. I felt bad, as I always do when my mom so kindly treats me to things, but if I didn't have this proper outfit I don't think I would have gotten the job! My mom even said "you gotta spend money, to make money" which is true, but I think we were in the wrong context, haha. I also broke my ...
  • No spending on hair care, unless, I run out of shampoo/conditioner completely and/or I need a dry shampoo refill.
... rule, but for a very good reason! My scalp is dry as the sahara and it's been itching and scabbing and I haven't the slightest idea why. I've never experienced something like that so I needed to run out and get dandruff shampoo (Got a clue? Get the blue. Yup, Selsun Blue, haha) I have no regrets because 86 more days of me scratching my head? No, thanks! Other than those necessary buys, I've been sticking to my rules quite nicely. It'll probably get harder as the holidays approach and brands come out with their new collections ... probably? It will. I know it will. I'm already salivating over MAC's new Retro Matte collection. All bright lipsticks?! Someone is trying to break me... but I shan't!

What have you guys been up to? It's only been a week, but it feels like an eternity since so much has happened! Thanks for sticking around to the end of the post :) I know it was a long one, haha! Hopefully my next spending ban updates won't come with a long winding life update, as well! Hope you all enjoy the extended weekend!

Neon & On & On | China Glaze's Pool Party & Celtic Sun

Just because summer's (almost) over doesn't mean we have to put away our bright and downright neon polishes, does it? Welp, not for me. I've been wanting neon nail polishes for the longest time and not just neon but down right highlighter color neons. Were you ever that kid in class who got so bored they started marking their fingernails with a highlighter? I totally was, and that's the sort of thing I wanted in a nail polish; bright and fluorescent, so much so that your eyes kind of hurt to look at it, aha! Well, I found those qualities in these two gorgeousnesses (I dare you to not skip over that word and actually read it, haha) by China Glaze. I'm not sure which one to start with as they both make me incredibly excited, but I guess I'll start with the one first in the picture. Pool Party is a vibrant and hot coral. In the bottle it looks pinky-coral, but on the nails it takes on a more orange-y coral. Celtic Sun is just straight up highlighter juice. It's as of you took apart you highlighter pen, removed the ink well bit and just melted it, haha. It's a flourscent and in your face yellow with little tints of lime green. These colors are quite bright on their own, but imagine how they'd look with a white polish as base? Although these colors are absolutely fun they can be a bit tricky to paint on. The China Glaze brush isn't the best around and it's a bit longer than most so it can go a bit flimsy. It's also on the thinner side which can make it difficult to get an even coat on the whole nail without it looking streaky. These polished dry a bit matte, so this would be one of those polishes you don't skip top coat with. Without a good base and top coat, these bright China Glaze polishes just won't look their best - and that's not to say you even need a white base underneath, just some solid base and top coats. Overall, I'm in love with these polishes. I got them for $4 at a Sally's Beauty Supply in Canada but I'm sure wherever you can get China Glaze polishes you can find these two beauts shining like the sun on the display! Summer may be coming to a close, but it's not over yet, so I'm taking advantage of the time I have left to wear these!
What is your favorite neon nail polish?

Back To School ... Already?!

Is this not the cheesiest of cheese ball thumbnails? I absolutely love it, haha, and am so proud - I can't explain why! Just look at that little apple! Oh man, thank you PicMonkey! If you're a frequenter of the land called YouTube and subscribe to beauty channels you've no doubt seen some spiffy Back to School videos! Welp, I wasn't thinking of doing one until a lovely subscriber asked if I could do makeup and outfit (and hair, but unfortunately I don't do much with it) for back to school. I sat down, thought of some ways to make my video informative but also fun and this is what I came up with! Fun, flirty makeup to make you look awake and ready for the first day back, as well as an outfit that's comfortable and makes you feel confident! This is how my typical morning for school usually goes with me putting on makeup I'd actually wear, with an outfit I would totally wear as well! It's a really fun video so even if you're not getting ready to go back to school I think you'll enjoy it!

BLOG SALE

Ooh, ooh! It's time for an ol' fashioned blog sale, y'all! (If you're new to my blog, I'm not actually from the south, haha) This week I started my spending ban titled Even Mermaids Have Shopping Problems (if you'd like to see the post with my rules, go ahead and click that title!). Before I started my ban I laid out every single piece of makeup I owned out onto my desk and noticed there was stuff I didn't use anymore and stuff I loved that I just didn't reach for. So I collected a few bits and pieces to go to new homes. Almost all of these products are at least half off their RRP, if not much less. I hope you guys find something you'd love to have and help me clear out some things and make my spending ban a bigger success. I promise, all the money from this blog sale is going straight to my savings account and staying there!
