NARS | Debbie Harry Eye & Cheek Palette [Picture Heavy]

Drum roll please! I have been waiting ages for this palette to be in my hands and to finally review it for you all! This holiday season NARS has brought out an entire Andy Warhol collection which part of it can be found at Sephora and another part at Nordstrom. I, being an ex-art major, was actually beyond excited when I heard about this collection back in March! When I saw this palette I became so infatuated with it that I had to get my hands on it the second it went live on Sephora.com. The reviews on this palette around the blogging world aren't fantastic. They're actually quite bad. It made me so sad reading all these reviews and having my heart crushed. The packaging of this product is brilliant. I, with a small majority, actual LOVE the rubberized material of the packaging. The black with silver writing is so classy and very NARS. Even the packaging the palette comes with is so cool I can't stand to throw it away. A take on Andy Warhol's Debbie Harry pop art, and it's very holographic which is outstanding visually! Opening the palette, before you even see the gorgeous colors, you find yourself looking at a wide mirror with an Andy Warhol quote on it "I always say one's company, two's a crowd, and three's a party."

The color's are gorgeous on sight, there is no denying it. Even before you swatch them you can see they are packed with glitter, or "diamond dust". The palette comes with one blush color, a highlight cheek color, and four mini shadow colors. The point of all these colors is that using them together you can create a very "Debbie Harry" look. The blush color is a pinky plum color, jam packed with glitters. The glitters are easily wiped of with a big fluffy powder brush. I personally love it because I have nothing like it and I think it's going to be great in the fall! The highlight color is alright. Not a huge fan as it comes out a tad chalky and the glitters are harder to get rid of it. The shadows are my favorite part! There's a beautiful shimmering purple, a sparkling turquoise, a sparkly white, and a glittering black. On first swatch they suck. Simple as that, they truly suck. The swatch below on the left is how the shadows look applied without primer and with Urban Decay primer. It looks the same on both. When you see that you start to wonder how NARS even managed to get this past the machines. The trick with these shadows is that you NEED to use the NARS Smudgeproof Primer. That would be a major downfall if you didn't have it but somehow the colors really pop! when you use this primer. Just take a look at the swatches on the right. Such a huge difference! All the eyeshadows are equally as jam packed with glitter. It's not a huge deal because when I used it I didn't really see any glitter fall out or any on the shadows. The colors do last a long time without creasing which is in part to NARS shadow formulation which is great! Now overall ...
Up until I started writing this review I was 100% sure that I was going to recommend this palette to you guys if you've got the NARS primer. Slowly and surely I just couldn't because now I'm thinking about it all and thinking this palette is just meh. The colors are gorgeous but so easily dupeable. I think what I may do at this point is return this palette (although I have no idea where my receipt is) and just get these shadows at MAC. I already have Aquadisiac which is an exact dupe of the turquoise color and Shroom which is pretty close to the white. Unless you're a die hard NARS and Andy Warhol fan, I can't find it in my heart to tell you guys that it's worth the $65. It's not even worth the 20% off I paid for it. Fantastic concept, but lack luster execution.

I'm quite sad looking at this now! What do you guys think?

  1. Its interesting how you went from love to meh. They look like hard work, and kinda remind me of the shadows I had in a makeup palette as a young teen.

You're very lucky you can return items you don't like... here in Australia you can't return anything unless it is unopened or damaged

    1. That took me by surprise. I was about to give it a "If you want it, get it" sort of review, but refrencing the shadows, and thinking of the price, it's not worth the trouble. NARS can do so much better than this.

Sephora has a fantastic return policy and I'm very grateful for it!

  2. Ahh what a shame! It looks gorgeous in the palette but I agree, you definitely need that primer becuase the swatches don't look as smooth/ pigmented without it! At least you're able to return it :) xx

    1. The palette visually is absolutely stunning but it's just lacing in quality I know NARS can do!

  3. I love the packaging so much, it's really pretty, but when I saw the colours I knew straight away it wasn't for me. I can tell it's the kind of palette I would love to stare at, but wouldn't actually get my money's worth out of. I can't believe it's $65! and also the difference between the colours alone, and with primer, definitely a huge difference x

    1. haha, you're right! I think I only wanted it so I could stare at it for hours! Such a huge difference which is smart for the company, but awful for customers!

  4. It sucks this isn't as good as you thought it would be. The colors look pretty in the pan, & the packaging is great. But I'm sure I have colors similar (maybe with more pigmentation, too.) so i hopefully won't be buying this! :)
